Preparing for the Worst

In times of uncertainty such as the one that President Trump is gifting us with, it’s entirely appropriate to worry about what the future might bring for oneself, one’s loved ones, one’s country, and the world.

More than likely, it’s this worry that has brought you here to find out what you can do to stop the bad things that are happening before they cause any more damage. And that’s what the bulk of this website is about – actions that we should all be taking to convince others that we need to be on a very different path from what we’re on now.

The other thing that you should be doing, however, is preparing yourself and your loved ones for the possibility that we might not stop the oncoming Trump freight train in time and you might suffer some personal catastrophe as a result of what he’s doing.

As it happens, there are plenty of communities that have been thinking about what to do in the event of a natural disaster, political unrest, economic depression, or some other large event that affects themselves and thousands or millions of people around them. These groups used to be called “survivalists” but that term came to be associated with a small subset of people who focused on committing acts of violence after a disaster. Nowadays, these groups call themselves “preppers” which better describes them in that their focus is generally not on guns n’ ammo but on more quotidian questions such as, “Where will I get drinking water in the first 72 hours after a massive earthquake?”

Googling “prepping” and “preppers” will find you much far more information about being ready for natural disasters than we can possibly present here. One pair of sites you might find particularly helpful in getting started is the Leftist Preppers Reddit Wiki and their Reddit.

As you do your reading and preparation, you might find it helpful to think about the vast universe of things to prepare for by dividing them up into categories such as,

  • Economic recession or depression.
  • Natural disasters (to include pandemics) with a blunted or incompetent governmental response.
  • Persecution of Trump’s perceived enemies (and will they include you?!?).
  • Suspension (or repression) of civil liberties.
  • Mass civil disobedience.
  • Foreign wars (e.g. an invasion of Greenland!).
  • And a continuum of domestic political violence that may range from isolated acts of terrorism/sabotage to an ongoing violent insurgency all the way up to a full-fledged civil war.

One way to think about preparing for the worst is to divide the preparations into subjects with the understanding that one set of preparations can apply to more than one potential disaster. For instance, we think of economic self-protection as having one’s personal finances prepared for job loss or a rise in prices. Since those things can occur during an economic downturn as well as during a civil war, we can think about economic self-protection as being part of being prepared for both of those eventualities. With that in mind, the way we divide up our preparations is,
