In May of 2025, the Papal Conclave was about to meet to select the next pope after Pope Francis’ passing and a reporter asked President Trump whom he’d like to see as the next pope. Joking (or perhaps not), he replied “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice”.
A few days later he shared an apparently AI generated image of himself as the pope on his public Truth Social account along with Instagram and X. The White House itself followed up by posting the image on their official Instagram and X accounts.
Catholics around the world were, as can be imagined, rather displeased.
